SK Sartell's Custom Kitchen

COUNTRY LIVING NEWS & SK Sartell

Silverton, Oregon- SK Sartell's husband is constantly teasing her that the Lord didn't make her any bigger because the world couldn't handle it. "There is absolutely nothing that a person can't do if they have the imagination and a little bit of knowledge." If I don't have the knowledge, I find it, study it and figure out how to do it." With her own design business she works as far as Washington DC. " My design theory is pretty practical and if  I can't have fun with it, I won't bother with it." Although SK and Ron's home is certainly French farm, she is known far and wide to design many different styles., from country to warm contemporized to traditional designs.

Inside this steep gabled  and rock fronted cottage the hand-done walls with their antique finishes make this house look and feel like a true old farmhouse. As you walk through the front door the open floor plan shows you the lifestyle that the Sartell's love and live. The kitchen is truly the heart of the home and the hand pounded copper  island with its pots and pans can be seen from the entry.   Her unique use of hand-carved plaster can be seen curving up the staircase. "I love to be enchanted and I want people to be enchanted everywhere they look without the house or its design being overwhelming. It is better to be simple than overdone, or even look as if you tried to hard. I want to make my home look as if we loved creating it." SK is preparing to open as a B&B with the cottage named White Oaks. But she's not ready to open until everything is "enchantingly perfect." SK's cuisine is gourmet country cooking and she will be assisted by Chef Darcy Sartell, who owns Silverspoon catering.SK Sartell's custom kitchen

.                        SK Sartell's custom living room design

SK Sartell enjoyed making her own front door. The round top door is made of yellow knotty pine. Above the door she has painted her families motto "Enter as Friends, Depart as Family."

SK's kitchen features less expensive materials with her pouring the concrete countertops and Ro n and SK building the plywood and pine cabinetry, reminiscent of a French farmhouse. Ron & SK's sink is built as a old fashioned farm sink. She built it with white Portland cement and fiberglass.

SK's basic design theory is simple materials and salvaged and or re-built items.

The cottage living room features SK's three colors, colors that are used throughout the house in different values and tones. These colors are repeated in every room with different touches, furnishings and murals. This creates a uniformity and cohesiveness throughout  the home. " It is  a important design basic that makes a home feel comfortable and put together."

A guest suite includes a private bath mural of a woodland haven with  magical fairies peaking  from behind ferns. SK murals are often three dimensional with added sculptural accents. The large soaking tub is fed from a rock water fall.
This quirky designer excels in what she knows best, color, space and design. She and Ron build cabinets from raw materials, draws house plans for new construction, creates one-a-kind painted furniture and is a nationally known color consultant and handles large design jobs all over the United States.

The White Oaks guest suite has been created with total comfort in mind. "Comfort with simple materials." Flipping an old TV/VCR cabinet upside down, using old finals for feet ,painting it black and dropping a sink into it's new pine top have made a great bath cabinet. "We found two beautiful antique doors and was prompted to build a very large and old fashioned high bed.

The house itself is another example of  SK's unique designing for less. Sartell took four years to draw the building blueprints  from the concrete style construction down to every detail. "Details are what make a persons home unique. My clients wish for something different than the typical home we see in our developments." Her custom home plans are unique in the fact that she pre-thinks plans and colors to reflect her client's personalities. Her husband, Ron, who  works as a  specialty contractor, builds to SK's designs while she finished the details.  Between the dynamic duo, they can and do work together to built uniqueness into a clients home.

While saving on materials by using little used materials such as pine for the cabinets and concrete for the kitchen countertops, sink and some of the floors. She applies acid stains for the concrete countertops giving them an aged look.

The couple built a concrete  home which reduces heating and cooling costs. "I know that not everyone can build their own homes,  there are designs  that fit any budget or ability level. It takes initiative and energy to  turn a plain wall or piece of furniture into something unique.  Think about your home in terms of what you love around you. collect the most wonderful pieces for your home and use them simply. It's always better to have a single piece  or color that you love rather than a lot of mediocre pieces that mean little or nothing, just take up space."
