Washington, D.C.

This work trip to Washington, D.C. was quite an adventure. Work and touring all rolled into one. You should have seen me at the airports. 6 large work boxes.  Get strange looks? Oh my...
I thought you might like to see the before and after pictures of this nine day whirlwind work  trip. Working ten to twelve hours a day we finished the three rooms in five days. This included all new, hand textured, painted and glazed walls, lighting and refinishing the owner's grandmother's  burnt dining table.

This town home is  in the thick of things, just a hop, skip and a jump from Washington, DC. The new owner's purchased the home for it's size and location.  There was absolutely no color any where. The lighting was cheap and  back in the 70's.  No style nor charm. Although  they wanted color, style and drama, it was very hard to trust  a complete stranger with their home.  You have to listen, look and have a working knowledge of how this client's life will be changed for the better with changes made in the environment. I have to always know and remember that this is not my home, nor does a client want my personality stamped  upon it. I have to be able to walk away knowing that they have their personalities stamped upon this personal space.
The above pictures are of the formal dining room, white walls, 70' style lighting and Grandma's burnt dark wood table and chairs.

The pictures below are the final result. Deep red walls with an old world glaze. Old rusted iron chandelier, curtains hung  from copper tubing that has been curled. I finished the window treatment off with a vine of simple leaves and scarlet berries.
We sanded the Formica topped table, removing old burn marks, painted it several coats of red then black then sanded it back. I painted a garland of berries over the light and hung the owner's beautiful black and white prints from black ribbons hung from copper dragonflies. We brought a little used desk kept from the owner's childhood to make an entry table.

As all of us know it's the final accessorizing that is the most fun of the whole process.   SK
